Everyone knows moving can be a stressful, difficult time. And not all moves are created equal. So even if this is not your first rodeo, it’s best to take a step back, reevaluate, and come up with a plan. At On the Move of Murfreesboro, TN, we know a thing or two about moving. Let us help you start on the right foot with some tips for what you should put on your checklist.

Sort Everything

Getting everything good and organized is the best way to see exactly what you have into ensure an easy packing and unpacking process.

Some people prefer to sort by item, and some prefer to pack by room. It all depends on how well you have your new space planned out.

It’s easiest to think to just put all the books together in boxes, but it may be best to keep the kids’ books separate from the office books and your own personal books if that’s how they will be organized in your new home.

Going through and organizing all your items is also the best time to see what you actually plan on taking with you – which brings us to our next item on the checklist.

Declutter Your Life

Everything you decide to take with you will cost you time, effort, and money, so really go through all of your things and make sure they are still worthy of being around.

Start by deciding what you want to keep. Everything else you will either donate or toss.

All those clothes in your closet that still have price tags on them? Start wearing them or donate them.

That pair of shoes with the floppy sole that you swore you were going to fix a year ago and haven’t looked at since? They’ve got to go.

That shirt that would look really good on you if only it were two inches longer and actually covered your midsection? Bye-bye.

Don’t Forget the Food!

It’s easy to remember to pack things like clothes, books, and dishes. But many people forget that their food has to go with them also.

Moving is the perfect time to go through and get rid of all those unused soy sauce packets and expired cans of beans.

You’ll need to save space in your car for all the boxes of food and make sure your new home has a refrigerator that’s hooked up and running.

If you’re planning a long-distance move, any non-perishable and dry foods you have left can be donated to your local food bank.
